Thirteen dollars, and it tastes like a bottle at twice the price. This is the one that lives in our own fridges — it is the single best value white on the shelf and we buy it deep.
A real Chianti Classico — black rooster, Sangiovese, the whole thing — for sixteen dollars. It's the red we restock more often than anything else in the shop, by a distance.

Italy makes wine in all twenty of its regions, from about five hundred native grape varieties, and prices almost all of it below what an equivalent French bottle would fetch. The catch is the labels: they assume you already know which hillside you're reading about, so most people default to the two or three names they recognise and overpay for them.
