From those fields came two experimental fermenters: one a 70 / 30 blend of soft red winter wheat and malted barley; the other an audacious 100 % malted wheat. When the new-make spirit finally met white oak, the distillers kept the barrels segregated, tracking how each mashbill painted the stave grain in its own hue. Seven quiet years later, the casks were married—no corn, no compromise—into Maker’s Mark’s first new whiskey recipe in more than seventy years.
